Cao cao presenting a sword to Dong Zhuo 1

Dong Zhuo a brutal unmerciful general of the Eastern Han Dynasty who took advantage of an internal conflict between the eunuchs and relatives of a the royal family members, led his army and marched into Luoyang (in today's Henan Province), the capital city of the Han Dynasty. Then he dethroned Liu Bian and placed the puppet Emperor Xian, Liu Xie, in the throne, and appointed himself Prime Minister. His soldiers did every conceivable evil in Luoyang, burning, killing and robbing. Many righteous officials tried desperately to get rid of Dong but failed miserably. What's worse, some were captured and killed by Dong. Cao Cao (155 - 220), a resourceful and flexible general, had been longing to do away with Dong for a long time. He pretended to make concessions to serve Dong and won Dong's trust, thus freely circulating around Dong.

One day, Cao visited Dong with a hidden but valuable sword when Dong sat on the bed with Lu Bu, Dong's adoptive son, in attendance. Seeing Cao, Dong inquired why he was late. Cao complained that his horse moved too slowly. Having heard this, Dong ordered Lu Bu to select an excellent horse to bestow on Cao. Subsequently Lu left to do so. Dong was too fat to sit for long so he lay down on his side, having his back toward Cao. Cao took the chance and drew his sword, but Dong caught a glimpse of it in the mirror. Cao hurriedly knelt down, holding the sword and saying, "I came here especially for presenting this valuable sword to you." Seeing that the sword hilt was encrusted with precious stones, Dong accepted it and led Cao out to see the horse. "Can I have a try ?" asked Cao. Being permitted, Cao mounted the horse and left. Before Dong and Lu Bu came to their senses, Cao had escaped out of the city and vanished without a trace.
